You find out in a letter of the alphabet at the end that Sweet Molar is structured as a book-inside-a-book. The whole novel is a manuscript written by Tom, the author Serena was liaising with. Essentially the spied upon becomes the spy, framing the human activity of writing as a kind of espionage.
Tom and Serena are exposed equally lovers; the scheme to fund up-and-coming writers with govt. funds is publicly exposed. They forgive one another for their mutual deceits. Hers was lying to him nearly the foundation, and withholding the truth of her profession. His deceit, which y'all don't learn about until the very terminate, was that he learns halfway through the story that she was a low-level spy. Max Greatorex -- ridiculous name! -- jealous and unhinged at her rejection, wanted to interruption them upwards out of spite, and so he tells Tom near Serena'south true task and also exposes her to the press.
Rather than face Serena directly, Tom proceeded to spy on her, by interviewing her former friends, coworkers and family unit members, to learn her entire dorsum story and write the book.
That they exercise reunite is implied -- because if they didn't the volume wouldn't exist. He tells her in the alphabetic character that if she wants, she tin can destroy the only manuscript -- or, if she chooses, he tin can publish it 40 years in the time to come, once it has passed the requisite number of years to exist declassified.
It's a bit of a fun business firm mirror play a trick on, gimmicky, only McEwan pulls it off. I found it a snoozefest at the kickoff but then it picked up.(less) (hibernate spoiler)]
